Lead Technician — Western Research Institute is seeking a detail-oriented individual with demonstrated flexibility and competency in multiple laboratory instrumentation operations and experimental procedures to support asphalt and petroleum-related research.

Position will perform sample preparation and analysis techniques using a wide variety of instrument and wet chemistry analysis methods using standard operating procedures and non-routine methods under development. Responsible for operation, maintenance and modification of laboratory and bench-scale equipment. May prepare designs and specifications for complex experimental procedures. Assists with data interpretation and analysis and with preparation of internal and external reports of experimental/process results. Responsible for the safe and timely performance of duties. Completes other duties as assigned.   

Position requires an associate degree in chemistry and six to seven years’ laboratory research experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. Must be competent in chemical analysis, instrumental analysis, laboratory-scale design and fabrication of experimental systems. Basic computer skills including reduction of computerized data as well as familiarity with spreadsheet and word processing software are necessary. Candidates with prior experience using liquid chromatography analysis (open-column and HPLC) are preferred.

Student Intern — Western Research Institute is seeking an organized, detail-oriented and responsive individual for an internship in our Asphalt & Petroleum Technologies Business Unit.

Candidate will primarily deal with analysis, clean up, and proper cataloguing of samples for oxidative aging of asphalts using a standard rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and a pressure aging vessel (PAV). Candidate may also perform less standard aging of thin films of asphalt. It is anticipated that the candidate will also participate in other research and development activities associated with analyzing chemical properties and physical performance characteristics of other hydrocarbon products. Some duties include, but are not limited to, FTIR spectroscopy, titrations, glassware cleaning, data entry, sample preparation and helping with safety. Under the direction of the project manager or designee, the intern will perform sample testing and assist in data analysis for reporting requirements. Intern will also participate with team members in assessing solutions to testing issues.    

Position requires undergraduate or graduate training in chemistry or engineering, working with a variety of solvents and wearing personal protective equipment (gloves and safety glasses). Laboratory research experience
